Cleaning Venetian Blinds Effectively with Home Essentials

When you think of blinds, venetian blinds are the ones that come to mind immediately. They are almost ubiquitous in offices and other commercial spaces. They are equally popular in the domestic setting, with modern variations making them an attractive option for any décor style.

The origins of Venetian blinds can be traced back to Persia, which the Venetian traders brought back to Europe. After their introduction, the design gained immense popularity throughout Europe. Now Venetian blinds are used and admired all over the world. Although the market has been flooded with many new window treatment solutions, venetian blinds continue to enjoy a lot of popularity with domestic and commercial users alike. Let’s look at some of the reasons that make Venetian blinds so popular.

Benefits of Venetian Blinds

The Look!

Venetian blinds give a unique look to the windows. The horizontal slats add character and structure to the windows, which goes well with both modern and traditional looks.

Durable and Affordable: Venetian blinds are extremely sturdy, especially the ones made from metal or natural wood. With careful handling, Venetian blinds can last for years looking as good as new. Although some materials can push the prices up, most of the Venetian blinds are affordable. This is one of the biggest reasons for its popularity.

Light Control: The smaller slats allow a lot of control over light. On a hot summer day, the smaller slats let in a lot of light, but also cut down the heat-gain. You can also position the slats in a particular position to let in as much light as you wish. When required, the slats can be closed completely to cut off light and create a calm and soothing atmosphere indoors.

Privacy: Another factor that makes these blinds so attractive is the privacy element. The smaller slats form a crowded barrier against the windows, keeping the interior private, especially during the day. So, while you enjoy the ventilation and the view, your private space remains hidden from the outside.

Insulation: Depending on the material, the thick slats can act as a formidable insulation barrier against the onslaught of nature. When closed, these slats stop the chill or heat from getting in, to a large extent. Even when they are open, the crowded design of the slats provides partial insulation or heat reflection.

Drawback of Venetian Blind

Although Venetian blinds come with various benefits, it has some drawback as well. The biggest drawback is the amount of dust they gather. As the slats run horizontally, they tend to gather a log of dust which shows. These slats are also very good at capturing pet hair and carpet dirt. As a result, Venetian blinds require more cleaning than other blinds.

The good news is that Venetian blinds can be cleaned easily with supplies that you already have at home. Let’s look at how you can go about it.

Cleaning Venetian Blinds Effectively

The first thing to do is get all the things you need in one place. You will find most of these things in your kitchen. You will need:

  • A microfibre cloth
  • Warm Water
  • A sponge
  • Dishwasher liquid
  • Baking Soda
  • Vacuum Cleaner with the brush attachment.

Now let’s get down to the actual process. We will begin with dusting.

Step 1: Close the blinds. Some blind slats, especially wood and faux-wood blinds, would close completely. Metallic or vinyl slats might overlap. In that case, don’t close them completely. Instead, tilt them downward.

Step 2: Use the microfibre cloth to wipe-clean the blinds. Move from top to bottom, use a soft left to right motion to clean the blind.

Step 3: Use the brush attachment and lightly vacuum the blind, using the same left to the right motion used above.

Step 4: Repeat the same process on the other side of the blind.

If dusting is not sufficient, you can try out other cleaning methods.

Step 5: Dampen the microfibre cloth with some warm water and use the same process, as described above, to clean the blind.

Sometimes your blinds accumulate sticky residues, which is very common if your blind is in the kitchen or bathroom. If that is the case, you will need a deep clean of your blinds. For a deep clean, you will have to take your blinds off the brackets and immerse them in warm water. The bathtub is the best place to do it.
