A THERAPEUTIC VIEW.
My baby has been very irritable today, and I am irritated too, and exhausted. Maybe she just wants to be cuddled tight and made to feel as comfortable as she was in my womb. I am trying to be calm. My husband is on a business trip. I’ll have to cope alone. I gaze up at the clear, moonlit sky studded with stars through the skylight of her nursery. I rock her gently and begin to sing. That view has calmed me down too. My voice soothes her. Soon the little angel is fast asleep. I’d passed on to her the insecurity of not having my husband around. That clear, unobstructed view of the sky takes me back in time to a vacation spent as a child in a rustic Californian lodge. The scent of pine cones, armed leather chairs in the reception area, a spectacular view of the mountains around me and sunlight pouring in through old skylights, stained with time, making a kaleidoscope of designs on the floor. Skylights are therapeutic indeed.
A WINDOW TO THE SKY.
Skylights are, in the true sense of the word, windows to the sky; they provide a clear, unobstructed view of the sky above us. In the day, it could be a blue sky and white cottony clouds. At night, it could be a dark, moonless sky, or a sky lit up with tiny, twinkling constellations. Open skylights give us plenty of natural light rich in Vitamin D, and fresh air coming in through window and door openings below pushes out moisture, odors, and other indoor pollutants through them. Thanks to the chimney effect! Nothing can bring in daylight into our homes better than skylights. We need two to three times more light to see by the age of 60 than we did at 20. Skylights help to balance the light in any room and transform living areas into more open and safer places – they cut down the need for electric lighting and reduce the demand for an unsustainable power that is currently challenging the health of the world’s environment; tiny bedrooms, attics, and lofts are transformed into spacious and vibrant living spaces.
A DISADVANTAGE TOO.
Too much of sun again is a drawback. A bright fiery sun peeping right into your home through your skylight is a menace. The intense UV rays are harmful if exposed to continuously and is a wear and tear factor for our furniture and décor. It also is a cause for energy inefficiency in our homes. With lengthening daylight and early sunrise in summer, it can take its toll on the quality of sleep we get, which in turn affects other areas of our life like giving the best shot in the office or at home. At these times, conventional window treatments can be modified to our requirements and used for skylights, serving the same benefits. Shades, blinds and shutters in a variety of colors and light filtering and blackout options help in taking total control of the sun when it shines right on top of our houses. Most skylights are mounted against the ceiling. They are out of reach and difficult to manoeuvre when opened or closed. The mechanical system used for operating them can be out of reach. In this case, many manufacturers offer a manual option for manipulating them. Manual manipulation in the form of an extension pole becomes awkward and frustrating at times. Many a times they get misplaced or are used for other chores. They take up unnecessary storage space.
MOTORISED SHUTTERS FOR SKYLIGHTS.
The icing on the cake is the use of motorized skylight shutters. Using a motorized control option saves time, energy and effort. The battery operated remote control unit is small, portable and perfect for very high skylights. It is a modern convenience to add to our home décor. A remote sensor in the head rail of a shutter and a remote control is all that is needed. They operate at the touch of a button. This eliminates the hassle of having to crank open hard to reach skylights. There are motorized operations with a remote control that have a range of approximately 64 feet.
SHADES OF THE FUTURE.
Technology has come so far that motorized shades or shutters for skylights can now be controlled via an IR (Infra-Red) or RF (Radio Frequency) remote, an electric light switch or even a smart phone. There are sun sensor keypads, programmable keypads, network integration and control systems. Programming options increase the energy efficiency of a home. A Control Pad is an intelligent touch remote that allows us to control our skylight shades and shutters efficiently. By using the pre-installed program or setting up your own program, you can allow your home a respite from the sun. A battery wand is powered by lithium batteries that can be replaced. It is controlled by a remote control and operates through RF. Two types of systems can be used for motorization. A wire control system is one in which the control unit is fixed close to a motor that allows motorization. A radio system is one in which the control is mobile. Shutters can be controlled within a radius of 20 meters or so, even through a wall. An eco-friendly option of motorization is the solar kit. Using solar power, the solar panel gets fully charged within a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight while the ambient light will charge the panels at a lower rate. This makes motorized shutters state of the art combining the elegance, beauty and tradition of custom shutters with the modernization of motorization.
