How To Hang Curtains Using A Rod At Home

Curtains are an essential element of room décor. They have emerged as one of the most sought-after window treatments that can provide pleasing aesthetics coupled with grace and grandeur to the room. In addition, curtains provide good sunlight protection and privacy and even the option of having a complete blackout ability. Some specially designed curtains give up to 99 percent external noise absorption and sound insulation to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the room. All this can be achieved only if the curtains are correctly hung on the windows.

How to hang curtains

  • Gathering the Necessary Tools for the Project:

The first step in the procedure is to get the necessary tools for the project. Remember that the tools should be of good quality so that the owner’s effort is reduced while the productivity increases. The following are the essential tools that are required for the project:

  1. Curtains
  2. Curtain rod and hardware
  3. Ladder
  4. Tape measure
  5. Pencil
  6. Level
  7. Drill and drill bit
  8. Safety glasses
  9. Stud finder
  10. Wall anchors (if needed)
  11. Iron
  • Measurement of the Windows:

The owner should ensure that they get the correct measurement of the windows to obtain the suitable curtain and rod set. First, they should measure the window’s width because, as an owner, one does not want to procure curtains or rods that do not cover the windows completely. A helpful tip is to add eight to twelve inches to the total width of the window so that the curtain rods should cover the window mold completely. The next thing to remember is that the total length of the curtain panels should be around two times the window’s width. In no case they should be as wide as or less than the window.  It is because the natural light will filter in the room through the spaces between the curtain and window frame.

To ascertain the length of the curtain, the experts suggest marking the spot where the owner decides to hang the curtain rod. Typically, it is four to six inches above the window, but it should be at least two inches above the window frame in any situation. The standard tip is to hang the curtain rod just below the ceiling to give a taller look to the room. Now the owner should measure the length of the curtain starting from the curtain rod to the floor. If the owner decides to hang small curtains, they negatively impact the room’s spacious feel. These short curtains make the ceiling look low and give a cramped space to the room. Conversely, curtains that are excessively long and drag on the floor can be a potential tripping point. Further, they are more likely to gather dust. Thus, the ideal length of the curtain is from the rod to just above the floor.

  • Bracket Installation:

The owner should use a pencil to mark the points where the holes are to be drilled for bracket placement. It is advised that the owner should fix each bracket at the height which they decided previously but about four to six inches wider from the window frame. This gives the owner the freedom to open the curtains when there is a need. Here the owner should make sure that the spots marked for drilling are level; otherwise, the entire curtain structures will be skewed. After drilling the holes, the owner should screw the brackets to the wall.

  • Installation of the Rods and Hanging of Curtains:

Once the brackets have been fixed, the next step is to place the rod in the brackets. First, the owner should check whether the rod is perfectly stable in the bracket. Next, if the curtains are ready-made and straight out of the box, they should first all be ironed to remove the creases and wrinkles. Once the curtain is ready, the owner should remove the finials from the rod and either stitch the curtain or roll it through it. Finally, place the rod in the bracket and set the finial back. The rod screws should now be tightened to keep the rod in place and stable.

Useful tips for hanging curtains using rod at home

  • Hang the Curtains as High as Possible:

The experts advise that the owner should hang the curtain a high as possible. It is because by hanging the curtain high, one can make the room look bigger and taller. So even if the ceiling is not very high, the effect can be achieved by placing the curtain rod near the ceiling.

  • Select a Timeless Classic Design:

It has been observed that curtains are not regularly replaced. Therefore, it becomes essential that the owner selects a style that is timeless and classic. The advantage of it will be that the design won’t run out of fashion, and the owner can have the same curtains without encountering the need of replacing them.

  • Experimentation and Customization with Curtains:

People often believe curtains are old fashioned and can only be used to give a traditional look to the room. However, the experts suggest experimenting with the curtain style, primarily if used with a rod. Layering or sewing multiple fabrics together or using a tape trip that gives a unique pattern are some things that provide a curtain with a modern and cosmopolitan edge.

  • Curtain Length should End just above the floor:

It is advisable that the curtain length should end just above the floor. If the owner decides on a curtain that ends a handful of inches above the ground, the curtains won’t give an impression of a good fit. They will appear awkward and abrupt and will provide the room with a restricted feeling. An ideal curtain length ends an inch or two above the floor. It makes the room look royal and big.

  • Selection of the Fabric as per the Room:

The owner must keep in mind that the curtain fabric should be suitable for the room’s theme. It is because a mismatched curtain spoils the entire look and feel of the room. For instance, a sheer curtain lets in more light and is ideal for a living room but not a bedroom. On the other hand, velvet curtains block light and are suitable for bedrooms as they provide more privacy.

  • Curtain Hardware should Complement the Fabric Shade:

Once the owner decides to hang the curtain with a rod, they must keep in mind that the curtain hardware, like the rod and the finials, should complement the shade of the curtain fabric. If the curtains are heavy, they demand bigger and more pronounced curtain rods. If the room’s theme is metallic, the owner should try to have similar metallic shades for the rod and the finials to match and compliment other room décor.

Curtains are an indispensable part of any room. They can be hung in several ways, but hanging them with a rod is one of the easiest and most opted for ways.  When appropriately installed on a rod, the curtains can make the room look royal, elegant and graceful. Installing curtains with a rod at home requires knowledge and training, but by following the steps mentioned above, the owner can do it independently on any afternoon. Of course, they need to have the tools mentioned above to implement the job. This DIY project saves the owner a lot of time and money as well as giving the desired theme to the room.
