Smart Hub

The commonly asked question is: how does a smart home work? How are the smart devices integrated and commands relayed to them? This happens through a smart home hub. A smart home hub is a device that helps to connect devices on a home automation network. They also help to control automation through them. They connect locally or to a cloud. They are best for the internet of things (IoT) devices that use protocols like Z-wave or Zigbee rather than Wi-Fi. Most of the smaller smart devices communicate through Z-wave or Zigbee wireless protocols which make smart home hubs a necessity. As your router will not support either protocol, your phone will have to communicate with something that can send Z-wave or Zigbee signals to your devices.

Also referred to as a smart home bridge, the work of smart home hubs is to collect and translate protocol communications from smart home devices. They help integrate all devices and systems into a centralized system. For users, the task is simplified as instead of controlling every device individually, they can control everything through a single smart home application.

Wink
