Norman Window Shutters – Inside or Outside Mount?

Measuring Norman Window Shutters

The first decision that needs to be made before you measure your windows is whether you want to mount your shutters on the inside or outside of the window frame. We highly recommend outside mount shutters as they are easier to measure and install. Outside mount shutters are mounted to the outside of the window frame.

Measure Your Norman Window Shutters

When measuring to fit any shutters to your windows, it is essential to be careful about measurements. Be sure always to have width and height clearly marked. Remember, always put your width measurement first, and height last.

For Inside Mount, there are two things to determine,

  • Window Frame Depth – To get the window frame depth, measure from the front edge of the window frame to the window.
  • Window Frame Squareness – Measure the window diagonally to determine if your window is a true square. If the diagonal measurements differ, you may have to do an outside mount instead.

First, measure the length and depth of the window. It is only necessary to give the smallest length and width. Then put exactly what your window frames measure to the nearest 1/8″. And make sure that you have enough window depth to fit the shutters. Measure the inside width of the window in three locations: top, middle, and bottom. Remember always to measure the opening at the point of the window where the shutter frame will be installed.

If the opening measures 60 inches or higher, a divider rail is required. For inside mounts, measure from the top of the window sill up to the center of where you would like the divider rail located.

For Outside Mount, many of the same principles for an inside mount apply. The difference with an outside mount is that you can extend or build out the frame by adding to the measurement where needed.

  • Similar to an inside mount application, measure the width and length of the area around the window you would like to cover.
  • Add the size of the frame you are using, including both the left and the right side.

Panels –

The number of panels in each plantation shutter will vary based on your window size. Multiple panels within the same shutter will be divided equally and will be the same size. Panel configuration determines how each panel will open and close on the hinges.

Divider Rails –

When you measure for the divider rail, measurements start where the bottom of the frame will be located and go up to the center of the divider rail. Record that measurement on the order form. Divider rails must be used on panels over 60 inches in height.

  1. We have an arch window that is 72″ across and 80″ high. We want a bifold shutter with horizontal slats. Is this possible to get in the poly material?
