Growing Pollution Across the World
The increasing levels of pollution and toxicity in the environment around are a cause of major health concerns. There is a steady rise in the growth of all types of diseases that are fast claiming lives all around the world. Small kids are falling prey to illnesses that will haunt them all their lives. Cities are being rendered unlivable given the amount of toxicity in the air which is caused by carbon emissions by the rising number of vehicles and manufacturing plants. Lakes and rivers are frothing due to dumping of chemical wastes in the water. A gulp of fresh air and water is all that is needed for a healthy living but is fast becoming a rarity.
The increasing air and water pollution have been drawing global attention over the last few decades and the leaders of the world are slowly waking up to the realization that the environment is deteriorating at an accelerated pace and a Herculean effort is need to alter the course of our destiny. The countries are coming together to address issues like global warming and rising temperature. They are advocating a plastic-free world that is posing health hazards to all living creatures. The world today finds itself in an emergency-like situation where if we do not act now it will be too late to prevent a disaster. We will be living behind an unfit and dangerous world for the next generation.
The Drive to Go Green
With so much being written and said about pollutions and health hazards, the focus is now constantly on evolving environment-friendly alternatives for all that we use. Go Green is the new mantra that is guiding the lives and policies of the country. There are drives advocating the use of environment-friendly substances and your window treatments are not too far behind. We know that more and more people are opting for energy-efficient window coverings as they help to prevent energy loss and put a check on sky-rocketing bills.
Window Blinds & VOCs
There are several window blinds in the market that use a synthetic dye that contains VOC. VOC stands for ‘volatile organic compound’ and like formaldehyde and lead, it can be extremely harmful. VOCs create smelly vapor in the room where they are installed. As they evaporate over a period of time they pollute the air. Inhaling these gaseous releases for a prolonged time can be damaging for you and your family’s health. There are again shades made of PVC or polyvinyl chloride and they are made with glue that contains the harmful formaldehyde.
According to the American Lung Association VOCs are “harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer.” As per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VOC can cause nausea, throat, and nose and eye irritation and can damage the kidney, lungs and even the central nervous system. Some of the other symptoms include,
• Allergic skin reactions
EPA also reports that “Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.” They are among the hardest toxins to avoid. Glues, adhesives, building materials, pesticides, etc. are among the many materials that contain VOC.
It is recommended that you choose materials that are not pre-treated with dangerous chemicals. Even if you want to give your window treatments a stain or paint, ensure that the paint does not contain VOC and is liquid-based.
What is GreenGuard Certification?
GreenGuard is a third-party certification organization that qualifies products for low chemical emission. GreenGuard Certification has been introduced to ensure that a particular product meets the most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emission of VOCs into indoor air. It has been created to provide assurance to consumers that products they have purchased and using on a daily basis have been made-manufactured following the strict emission limits. This is to ensure that you can create a healthy and safe environment at home.
GreenGuard Certification for Window Treatments
For window treatments like blinds and shades GreenGuard tests the different fabrics and materials used to ascertain that the chemical and particle emissions of the products are within limits of the accepted Indoor Air Quality guidelines. Graber blinds and shades are manufactured from GreenGuard Indoor Air Quality certified raw materials. Before investing in window treatments double-check whether you are purchasing products with Green Guard Certification. It is just not a pair of window blinds that you are investing in. Your family’s wellbeing and health is also dependent on this and you can never take chances with that. Be alert, be safe.
